Rock

One-bar rock vocabulary for learning backbeats, kick variations and common eighth-note feels.

Pack overview

What you will practice

Rock patterns are ideal for learning how a stable hi-hat pulse supports kick and snare variations. Most of these exercises keep the backbeat familiar while changing one part of the bass drum phrase.

Do not treat the patterns as a speed test. Listen for consistent hi-hat spacing, an even snare sound and a kick that supports the pattern without pulling the tempo forward.

Learning goals

  • Maintain an even eighth-note pulse.
  • Keep snare backbeats consistent while the kick pattern changes.
  • Recognize common rock, pop, country and metal variations.
  • Move between patterns without losing the bar line.

Practice routine

  1. Count 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and before playing.
  2. Practice hi-hat and snare alone until the backbeat is automatic.
  3. Add the kick pattern and loop the bar at least four times.
  4. Increase the tempo by five BPM only after four accurate repetitions.

Choose a pattern to play

Listen first, then open the pattern in Studio to follow its notation and rebuild the pattern.
