Pack overview
What you will practice
Most patterns in this set are longer than one bar. Learn the ride-bell line as a complete phrase before adding drums; stopping mentally at each bar line makes the second half sound disconnected.
The kit substitutes for a small percussion section here. Ride bell carries the timeline, toms or snare supply the response, and kick marks selected low notes. Keep the bell quieter than the accents below it.
Learning goals
- Play each ride-bell phrase from memory without adding or dropping an eighth note.
- Enter the kick on its written offbeats while the bell hand continues unchanged.
- Hear the difference between bar one and bar two instead of treating the second bar as a repeat.
- Loop the final beat into the next beat one without a hesitation or extra accent.
Practice routine
- Set 80 BPM and play only the ride-bell row for eight cycles.
- Add kick. If the bell changes when the foot enters, remove the foot and repeat the troublesome half-bar.
- Add snare and tom notes one row at a time, keeping them louder than the bell but below rimshot volume.
- Return to the written tempo only after you can enter on either bar and still finish the phrase correctly.
